Nominations are progressing smoothly for the Dei Open and New Ireland Provincial by-elections, following the issuing of writs last Thursday, 4 December 2025, by Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae.

For the Dei Open seat, five (5) candidates have so far nominated to contest the seat, which became vacant after the passing of Steven Pim. All five candidates are male and are contesting as Independents.

One candidate nominated on Friday, while four lodged their nominations yesterday, and more are expected to nominate before nominations close this Thursday, 11 December 2025.

For the New Ireland Provincial seat, which became vacant after the passing of one of the nation’s founding fathers, Sir Julius Chan, no nominations have been received to date. However, the Electoral Commission expects candidates to come forward before the deadline.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Margaret Vagi confirmed that nominations will remain open until 4:06 pm on Thursday, followed by the candidates’ draw on Friday, 12 December 2025.

She reported that no incidents have been recorded since the start of the nomination period and urged those intending to nominate to do so before the closing time.

Mrs Vagi also reminded candidates and supporters to observe the rule of law, especially with the elections taking place during the festive season.

“Democracy is about having respect for one another, respecting the rights of individuals, and freely engaging in the decision-making process based on one’s own conscience,” she said.

Election Schedule:

  • Writs Issued / Nominations Open: Thursday 04 December 2025
  • Nominations Close: Thursday 11 December 2025

Mrs Vagi appealed to candidates and community leaders to take ownership of the electoral process and ensure peaceful conduct throughout the by-elections.
