SENIOR women officers from the Office of Censorship gathered at Marianville Secondary School to celebrate National Women’s Day, honoring the contributions of women to society and nation-building.
The National Women’s Day which fall on Sunday (March 24th) was brought to Monday, March 25th with the approval from Chief Censor Jim Abani and highlighted the theme “Count Her In: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”.
Deputy Chief Censor Llikomau Ali emphasised the significance of recognizing women’s contributions, noting that despite its formal declaration in 1975, National Women’s Day does not receive sufficient attention in commemorating all the hard-working women in the country.
“Women are so important thus they need to be honored and celebrated for their contributions towards nation building,” she said.
She highlighted foresight of past leaders in establishing March 24th, as a day to honor women’s roles in Papua New Guinea’s development.
Llikomau paid tribute to influential women leaders such as Dane Josephine Abaija and Nahao Rubu, acknowledging their pivotal roles in the country’s journey to independence. She reiterated that women, regardless of their roles, play vital roles in advancing the nation’s progress.
During the event, Llikomau urged women to make informed decisions in their personal and professional lives, emphasising the impact of choices on individual satisfaction and societal development.
“If you make the wrong decision, you end up at the wrong side but if you make the right one, you’re satisfied,” she added.
The commemoration concluded with a question and answer session, allowing girls from Marianville Secondary School to engage with the women from the Office of Censorship on various topics.
