O’NEILL: PNG GRASSROOTS GAMES IN SHP WILL GO ON

The 2024 Papua New Guinea Grassroots games in Southern Highlands Province is set to be hosted this year.

This announcement was made known yesterday during the Southern Highlands Provincial Assembly Meeting at the provincial capital Mendi town, in which a majority of the provincial assembly members were present.

Member for Ialibu Pangia and former Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neil said that the Grassroots Games have been going on for 20 years in Papua New Guinea and, has been an important avenue which served as an exceptional pathway for young talented sports people to compete and progress.

During the meeting, Southern Highlands Provincial Assembly has decided to host the games in five (5) months’ time.

It was also announced that each of the five (5) DDAs have agreed to commit K1m each, to sort out preparatory exercises and facility upgrades before the games.

The member for Ialibu Pangia also announced that he made a K1 million donation to support the 2024 PNG Games in Southern Highlands Province.

“We are a bit short on money even after the five DDAs contribute plus the Province, so today I am donating K1 million, personally to ensure that Southern Highlands can host the much 2024 PNG Grassroots Games,” said O’Neill.

However, it was clarified that further announcement on funding and preparatory progress will be let known to the country when all local members of parliament collaborate through their contributions to make this remarkable sporting festival a success.
