O’NEILL: POLICE SERVICE A KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL, STRONG PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Flanked by Governor Southern Highlands, Hon. William Powi; Alternative Prime Minister, Hon. Rainbo Paita and several MPs, member for Ialibu Pangia and former Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O’Neill joined in the opening of 50 newly built Police houses in Ialibu Pangia district.

“An effective and honourable Police service is one of the keys to all successful societies. They build
trust in communities and create a strong sense of safety and security.”

“Investment, both domestic and foreign, closely tracks to an effective Police service. We can see how the erosion of trust in our government and Police service in recent years has hollowed out investment in our country leaving job hunters without employment and a general feeling of a lack of confidence.”

“Today, I am very proud to see the opening of these 50 police houses for the Police and their families
in my community of Ialibu Pangia. Communities that value the role of the Police and provide proper
accommodation are what is needed here in the Southern Highlands and around our country.”
“We in Ialibu Pangia are saying with the building of these 50 Police houses, that we value absolutely
the role of the Police in our districts. We want you to feel at home and for your families to have a sense of pride in where they call home.”

“My late father came here as a young man and built the first school, the first health clinic, the first administration and the first Police station complete with kalabus.”

“I am a product of a safe community that values the role of grassroots Police. I grew up and was able to go to school and progress in life, in large part, because I came from a place of discipline where law and order was in place.”

“Policing must go back to those days where our Police interact in a professional and friendly manner
with everyone in our community. Creating networks and gathering information about potential
conflicts and problems. Actively addressing small problems between our people so that they do not turn into tribal fights for instance.”

“Noticing if there are domestic violence issues; road safety issues; drug and alcohol abuse is the first
step to stamping these law-and-order issues out. Everyone deserves a safer PNG and I am asking the Police men and women who will occupy these new houses to go about your work with purpose. You are important members of our community and I ask you to make your presence felt.”

“I know that it can be disheartening for our Policemen and women when the national leadership of
our country and our Police service is not functioning well. I understand, but I will not give up on building a strong PNG Police service and nor should you.”

“To the people of Ialibu Pangia, and indeed every community around our country – stand tall and support our local police. Give them the respect they deserve.”

“It matters more than ever that our villages and towns are safe. Our children are growing up thinking
that violence is normal. It is not. They need to know without doubt that the Police that live and work
in Ialibu Pangia are here to keep them and their families safe.”

“To those in blue who will occupy these houses with your families – please understand the sacrifice
made to ensure you live comfortably. We respect you and your job. Please respect the homes provided to you. Grow gardens and keep the houses spotless inside and out.”

“There is change coming in our country. I do not want today to be about National politics, but I do
want you to know that there are a very many politicians who hear your cries about the cost of living,
lack of jobs; lack of health care; the massive debts being run up and generally the downfall of our great
nation that is underway.”

“Goodness will prevail. God assures us of his will and God will bring about a positive change in his own timing.”

“I thank Governor Powi for his leadership of our Southern Highlands Province and can assure you we are here to Build a Strong Nation for you.”
