Opposition Leader Joseph Lelang is in support of a ‘Private Members Bill’ expected to be tabled in Parliament in this Parliament Sitting which begins tomorrow.
The Member for Abau Sir Puka Temu is sponsoring the Bill as a Private Members Bill to repeal and replace the St John Ambulance Act as an effecient means to replace this vital institution.
Mr Lelang said this after a short tour around the facility last week Friday. The members of the senior management team were able to demonstrate to the Opposition Leader available facilities and resources that are used to respond to emergencies.
Mr Lelang said the work of the St John Ambulance is in high demand in the wider Papua New Guinea for Ambulance Services.
He said the provision of health services in our country has become more necessary at this time when lifestyle diseases are on the rise and with the increasing population over the years allows me to assure Parliament of the Opposition’s support on the Bill,” he said.
“Let me say thank you to the St John Ambulance Chairman Sean Kekedo, the Chief Executive Officer, the entire Council Members and management for taking a proactive and positive step towards making St John Ambulance not only more effective but also relevant in this time,” Mr Lelang said.
He was impressed with the excellent set-up of the ambulance’s service operation centre.
Mr Lelang said, “Although it is still a work in progress as St John Ambulance is yet to be established nationwide, I must commend the ambulance for their tireless and continued work in saving lives as first respondents.”
