OTML Aims to Improve Psychosocial Safety at the Workplace

OK Tedi Mining Limited (OTML), through its Safety Department, recently hosted a health and safety forum to engage with its business partners on the importance of maintaining high safety standards in high-risk work environments.

The forum, held at the Tabubil Country Club, centered on the theme “Psychosocial Safety.” OTML Safety Manager, Anna Ila, introduced the theme by emphasizing the need for “thoughtful and meaningful” conversations about current risk management practices. She stressed that while traditional safety measures are crucial, they may not be sufficient on their own. Ila highlighted that psychosocial safety is a growing concern in the industry and that there is a need to integrate it into a broader and more holistic risk management framework.

Her opening remarks focused on the importance of addressing psychosocial safety alongside physical safety, encouraging participants to explore this hazard’s impact and how it can be effectively managed.

The forum’s guest speaker, Angelina Badri, Founder and Director of the Australian-based company Universal Safety & Wellness, conducted a workshop on psychosocial safety. Badri challenged OTML and its business partners to integrate psychosocial safety as a critical aspect of their risk management strategies, emphasizing that the cost of doing business should never be a human life.

In addition to the discussions, the event recognized outstanding contributions through the OTML Business Partner Reward and Recognition program. Awards were presented in categories including Best Safety Performance, Best Safety Innovation, Leadership and Integrity, and Contract Owner Safety.

This forum underscores OTML’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing safety, fostering collaboration with business partners, and setting new standards for a safer, more resilient mining industry.
