POLICE in Oro will be clamping down on cyber-crimes offenders effective immediately especially those using social media platforms to cause disaffection and spread false information on the development front.
Chief of Oro Police Ewai Segi issued this warning in light of continuous dooms trolls using social media platforms for political propaganda against progress and development.
“I am all for freedom of speech and expression of one’s opinion on the social media space but those spreading defamatory and disaffection statements must stop or be prosecuted to the full arm of justice under the Cyber Crimes Act,” Segi said.
“The dissemination of misleading content can sow discord and creaty unnecessary tension within the community, government and servants of essential utility services such as power, water and health and education.
“I want to urge all online trolls who are actively disseminating inform on social media platforms to do so using facts, verify their claims via credible sources before going to air on social media platforms.
I encourage the wider community to come forward and report any suspicious or harmful posts for police to take action against those elements of misinformation. If you are going to engage do so in a constructive manner that creates healthy informative debate and discussion.
Let us all work together to foster a healthy and informed community free from misinformation and ill-informed trolls.
I have also warned members of the Oro Police if there is any officer involved in disseminating false or misleading information on social media you too will be dealt with criminally and administratively under the cybercrimes Act.”
Similar sentiments have also been expressed by Head of the Provincial administration Trevor Magei adding that Trolls of the negativity and false information are the lowest form of lazy people.
