PM Marape declares Friday 8th of January as public holiday in respect of late Sir Mekere

Friday, the 8th of  January 2021 has been declared a public holiday by Prime Minister James Marape in respect of the state funeral of the former Prime Minister and senior statesman the late Sir Mekere Morauta.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the late Sir Mekere’s State Funeral, Minister Justin Tkatchenko  made the announcement  today at a press conference.

Mr Tkatchenko who is the Minister for Housing and Urbanisation and MP for Moresby South said the programme of the late Sir Mekere  State Funeral at Sioni Kami Memorial United Church will be sent out to the media and public by tomorrow.

The public and dignitaries as well as the family and relatives of the Late Sir Mekere are all welcome to attend, Mr Tkatchenko said.

He described yesterday’s public viewing and paying of respect to the Late Sir Mekere at Parliament’s Grand Hall  by thousands of Papua New Guineans as a ‘ remarkable day’.

“It was done in an orderly fashion and without an  incident. It was a pleasure to witness Papua New Guineans showing respect to the late Sir Mekere Morauta that way,” Mr Tkatchenko said.

A detailed report of the State Funeral will be published in the Sunday Bulletin weekly newspaper.
