PNG Air has increased its flight services into Mendi as peace and normalcy continue to return under the ongoing Special Police Operations in the Upper Highlands region.

The airline, which resumed services into Mendi last year, has now expanded to two scheduled flights weekly, beginning last week. Discussions are underway for a possible third flight as confidence in safety and stability grows.

The decision by PNG Air Services Ltd marks a significant step towards restoring the economic vibrancy once enjoyed by Southern Highlands Province, when Mendi was a thriving commercial hub.

Air services into Mendi were severely disrupted three years ago following the destruction of an Air Niugini aircraft during unrest that broke out after the 2022 National General Election.

Special Operations Commander Anthony Wagambie Jr has assured travelers and the business community that the airport and all inbound aircraft are under strict protection. He said security forces are committed to ensuring safe and uninterrupted air services for the people of Southern Highlands.

Security personnel have been stationed around Mendi Airport since PNG Air increased flights last week, maintaining a visible presence to deter threats and safeguard operations.

Since the deployment of security forces to Mendi for the Special Police Operation, the town has experienced a period of relative calm, with residents moving freely and businesses resuming normal activities.

Authorities say the improved situation reflects strong collaboration between law enforcement, local communities, and provincial leaders as efforts continue to stabilize the upper Highlands Region.
