PNG eyes robust team for Pacific Games

By CHARLIE DUMAVI

PRIME Minister James Marape has confirmed that Papua New Guinea will assemble a strong team for the XVII Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands next month (October).

He emphasised that PNG is committed to sending its largest and most robust team to compete.

PM Marape made this announcement following the commencement of the annual Prime Minister’s Corporate Golf Challenge on Friday.

The Gold Challenge is a fundraising event aimed at supporting Team PNG for their representation on the international stage.

“Our team will be at full strength, representing our nation in significant numbers reflective of our country’s size,” PM Marape said.

He stressed the primary objective of the charity golf event is to extend assistance to the PNG team participating in the upcoming Pacific Games.

While the national government will be a major contributor to the team, Marape also expressed his gratitude for the significant support coming from corporate companies.

He praised their participation, noting over 50 teams’ involvement in this event.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the vital role of sports engagement in embracing the youth and fostering national unity.

He conveyed that the PNG government is actively supporting Solomon Islands in hosting the games and will provide continued security support during the event.

A total of 54 teams enthusiastically participated in this year’s tournament, contributing to Team PNG’s pursuit of gold in the Pacific Games.

President of the PNG Olympics Committee, Sir John Dawanicura, conveyed his appreciation to PM Marape and the government for their consistent support since the inception of the golf event in 1998.

He acknowledged the legacy of past leaders, especially late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, in supporting and gracing these events.

The 2023 annual PM’s Golf Challenge saw a vibrant gathering of golfers from various age groups and genders, all coming together for this exciting one-day event.
