PNG LNG powered by innovation

TWO of ExxonMobil PNG Limited’s Engineers of the Future – Israel Kilawe and Jonathan Lanto – recently joined government officials, CEOs, and industry leaders at the Innovation PNG 2023 conference to deliver a case study on how the PNG LNG Project is leveraging data to drive innovation.

In addressing delegates, Israel Kilawe, Instrumentations and Controls Engineer at ExxonMobil PNG, stated that over the past decade PNG LNG has not only helped launch an industry, but it has set global benchmarks and delivered more than PGK23 billion back to the State of Papua New Guinea and its people.

“Our consistent annual production of over 8 million Tons of liquified natural gas (LNG) exceeds the initial design capacity of the Project.

“This remarkable achievement is a result of our continued commitment to safe operations and innovative excellence,” Israel said.

Jonathan Lanto, Electrical Engineer at ExxonMobil PNG, added that not many people know a significant part of PNG LNG’s success is, but thanks to ExxonMobil’s focus on applying next-generation technologies.

“This technology helps us generate large amount of data that we can analyse and visualize to guide our day-to-day activities and help us unlock value across our operations,” Jonathan said.

He said from smart tools through to immersive and cloud-based technologies, data gathered has become a crucial asset to engineers to help make informed decisions, spot trends, and improve processes.

“We see where a potential bottleneck can impact the effectiveness of our maintenance program.

“This has supported us moving away from schedule-based maintenance to predictive maintenance, which reduces paperwork, saves time, and enables our resources to be redeployed,” Jonathan said.

In addition to this Israel added that, “we are also using computer logic to help improve upon simple human insights and reaction times to automatically make process decisions and increase performance”.

“As a Papua New Guinean engineer working at ExxonMobil, I am proud to see how this company proactively makes sure we are operating on the latest technologies in the industry.

“The current innovation in technology has not only enabled us to achieve milestone results but also ensures all our staff work safely.”
