THE PNG Parliament House, a symbol of national identity and democracy, celebrates its 40th anniversary yesterday, representing the cultural and historical heritage of Papua New Guinea.

Opened on August 7, 1984, the iconic building is more than just a legislative chamber it was designed to reflect the nation’s rich traditions, with its architecture inspired by the traditional Sepik Haus Tambaran (spirit house) and the Highlands Round House, blending modern and indigenous elements in its structure.

The idea of establishing a dedicated building for the National Parliament House was conceived in the early years following PNG’s independence in 1975.

The ceremony was officiated by the Parliament Clark, Kala Aufa, who paid tribute to the people’s house, acknowledging its magnificent design that reflects the country’s diverse culture and shared traditions.

The Clark said the 40 years anniversary of this iconic building reminds the citizens about the rich heritage that the country has.

Prime Minister James Marape, who was scheduled to be the keynote speaker did not make it through, however, Minister for National Planning, Hon. Sir Ano Pala, delivered the speech on his behalf.

Sir Pala, who was also a parliamentary clerk before being elected as a Member of Parliament, acknowledged the significant milestone the building has reached.

“This is a great milestone for this beautiful building,” Sir Pala said.

“The timber work is one of the finest in the country because it has stood the test of times,” he added.

“While the house celebrates its 40 years, it is also important that we celebrate the democratic system of government that PNG has been given to.

“The government system we are in today is not of our own. We adopted it from foreigners, but I want to praise our country for adopting to it very well despite challenges,” Sir Pala emphasized.

Other Members of Parliament present were Opposition Leader, Hon. Douglas Tomuriesa, Alternate Prime Minister and Finschhafen MP, Hon. Reimbo Paita, Attorney General, Hon. Pila Niningi, and reinstated Madang MP, Hon. Bryan Kramer.
