THE Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Long Range Reconnaissance Unit (LRRU) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of events, including capability demonstrations, a formal dinner, and a family day to honor the dedication and service of current and former members. Amid the celebrations, the highly demanding LRRU Selection Course is currently being held at the Goldie River Training Depot.

The LRRU, known for its specialized skills, undergoes rigorous training in diverse and challenging conditions to provide both strategic and tactical support to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF). The selection course, an essential part of the unit’s recruitment process, is designed to identify soldiers with the physical endurance, mental resilience, and leadership qualities required to serve in this elite and strategically vital force.

Candidates for the LRRU face an intense array of physical challenges and problem-solving tasks designed to test their ability to operate under extreme stress and in complex environments with limited support. The selection process evaluates the candidates’ ability to work effectively in small teams, a critical skill for the unique nature of the LRRU’s missions.

The course is conducted by serving members of the LRRU, with instructional support from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) under the Defence Cooperation Program (DCP). The DCP continues to play a key role in supporting the PNGDF, strengthening the long-standing defence relationship between Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Those who successfully complete the initial selection will move on to a series of 12 specialist courses that focus on developing individual skills, enhancing operational readiness, and fostering team interoperability. Upon completing all required training, successful candidates will be qualified to join the LRRU.

The LRRU remains a cornerstone of the PNGDF, ensuring the force’s capability to conduct operations in some of the most demanding and remote regions of Papua New Guinea. The ongoing selection course serves as a testament to the unit’s continued commitment to excellence and operational effectiveness.
