THE Ambassador Ministry of the UPNG Seventh-Day Adventist Church conducted a cleanathon yesterday at the Games Village residential hall at the University of Papua New Guinea as part of their clean-up community project.
Following the cleanathon held in the morning, the Ambassadors donated 13 wheelie bins to the UPNG Students Services Department to be used in the halls of residence.
It was highlighted that the church community on campus has taken the initiative to assist the university by assuming greater responsibility.
The Ambassadors whose ages range from 15 to 22 presented the wheelie bins, as a way to sustain and maintain rubbish collection and cleanliness around the residential area and provide a conducive environment for the students and the university.
Representing the Ambassadors, Mr. Arilla Haro explained that: “We all need to change and if this is happening, the first change starts with us.
“This is our contributions to you to understand that cleanliness is next to Godliness.
“From the church, we are happy to do this, and being part of this community, we feel a sense of responsibility in doing this. It is something we always do every year as part of our community service.
“We may not be able to manage everything outside, but we hope that through this small act, the university will appreciate our efforts, and it will make a positive impact on the community.”
Deputy Director Catering & Residential at Students Services, Mr. Robinson Lanza applauded the Ambassadors and the Church for the community service and the donation.
“We appreciate the church for donating the wheelie bins, which is a timely donation as we will be using them along with the others to help promote a clean environment in this place,” Mr. Lanza expressed.
“Most times people are not responsible enough to dispose rubbish at the correct place. So with this we hope we can change the perceptions of every individual to ensuring a better learning environment and community to live”
With the idea of providing proper rubbish disposal bins at each of the residences, the 13 wheelie bins will be stationed at halls of residence together with other bins for students to see and ensure all rubbish is disposed of in the right place.
Mr. Lanza said, they hope to see students join forces to keep the environment clean and create a better university community.
