THE East Sepik Governor Hon. Allan Bird in expressed concerns on Gender Base Violence (GBV) during the plenary season yesterday.
He said the country needs more advocacy on law and order.
“I don’t think any Papua New Guinean powerful men are going to face the court given our current system, given our current level of Policing,” Governor Bird stated.
“For me personally, I think Justice is an indispensable, far more from this whole equation.”
Meanwhile, Governor Bird highlighted the work of the GBV advocacy stating that in the last five years they were able to pull a couple of work together and they are seeing results to their actions.
He revealed that so far there are three perpetrators who have been sentenced to life as a result of their collective effort.
“We got 64 are waiting for us, and that’s part of the work we have done,” Governor said.
“Getting beyond advocacy, I think perpetrators need to be punished. Perpetrators need to know they have a limit to the things they can and can’t do.”
Governor Bird explained, that one of their key focuses, is addressing the issue and working towards completely eradicating it for women and girls to feel safe in the community.
“I used to complain a lot about the fact that we are not doing enough, but I’m happy to see some other work we have done through the committee.”
