A pilot initiative aimed at improving water security in elementary schools across Morobe Province has evolved into a model for strengthening water and sanitation service delivery province-wide.

The Morobe Water Security Project, initially designed as a targeted intervention, has delivered tangible benefits to 35 elementary schools, which began the 2026 school year with access to safe drinking water, along with new desks and chairs for students.

The project is led by a provincial water security working group and reflects a new, coordinated approach to service delivery.

The initiative is a partnership between the Morobe Provincial Administration and the Australian Government, focusing on strengthening institutional processes to ensure more effective and sustainable water services. Through the project, 98 water tanks and 1,050 desks were supplied to 35 primary schools across selected districts, directly benefiting students, teachers, and surrounding communities.

Morobe Provincial Administration Director of National Functions, Fiona Gesa, acknowledged Australia’s support and highlighted the long-term impact of the pilot.

“The lessons and experience gained from this pilot project, which delivered water security and improved learning environments to 35 schools, will guide long-term improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene practices across Morobe Province,” Ms Gesa said.

Community members have also welcomed the project’s impact. Parent and local resident Anna Gawi said the new water tanks have helped resolve challenges that communities have faced for years.

“For more than a decade, we struggled to access clean water, especially for our children, women and vulnerable people. These new water tanks are a genuine blessing and provide much-needed relief for both the schools and the wider community,” Ms Gawi said.

Through this joint investment, the Morobe Provincial Administration and the Australian Government have demonstrated how strong institutional partnerships can deliver sustainable, life-changing outcomes for schools, families and communities across the province.
