FOR the very first time in the history of Papua New Guinea, fashion was represented on a global stage in Moscow at the BRICS+ Fashion Summit held from October 3 – 6 in Moscow. Over 150 countries were represented at the prestigious event.
Industry leaders from around the globe presented on various topics during the summit. Giants in manufacturing the likes of China, India, and Indonesia shared their experience giving insight into the business while thousands of visitors listened.
Fashion educators from the likes of Malaysia, Argentina and Paris discussed opportunities for fashion education. Designers from around the world showcase their work on the Heritage Exhibition, creating a the opportunity for dialogue and exchange and fashion week specialists from around the globe spoke about the unique challenges and opportunities of creating national platforms that contributed to nation building and development.
The summit provided the opportunity to network and create cross cultural exchange with the world.
Papua New Guinea was represented by PNG Fashion Weeks Founder and Managing Director, Philma Kelegai.
Speaking at the “Fashion from afar” segment of the summit, Miss Kelegai promoted and marketed Papua New Guinea as a fashion tourism destination. “With our rich culture and heritage we are in a unique position to showcase fashion through the lens of 1000 tribes. This is our strength, and our fashion designers are our cultural ambassadors, they will tell our story, and the world wants to experience the final frontier of fashion.”
The summit was a massive success culminating in a memorandum of understanding being signed by all participating countries toward united federation to assist in pushing the agenda of all participants. Papua New Guinea is a founding member of the federation.
PNG Fashion Week is scheduled for September during the independence weekend in 2025.
