Police boost security for major events

Commissioner of Police David Manning has assured the public in Port Moresby and across the nation that comprehensive security preparations are in place for three major events scheduled in the coming months.

These events include the resumption of Parliament on September 3rd, the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis on September 6th, and the launch of Independence celebrations on September 16th—each marking a significant occasion for the nation.

“Police are well-prepared to support these high-profile events as we approach the Independence celebrations,” Commissioner Manning stated in a statement.

“Each event presents unique security challenges that require specific planning and operational strategies. In the coming weeks, the public will notice an increased police presence as we implement our security plans for these major occasions.

“For the resumption of Parliament on September 3rd, our focus will be on ensuring that Elected Members, the Speaker of Parliament, and their staff can perform their duties without disruption. This includes maintaining order among supporters and preventing any unlawful actions.

“Pope Francis’ visit is a high-security international operation that involves coordination with the Vatican. The RPNGC is collaborating with key partners to manage this event effectively. The visit will include public engagements, drawing thousands of Christians eager to see His Holiness. We will implement extensive security protocols to facilitate the smooth flow of the public and secure official events.

“Our diverse community is eager to welcome the Pope and his messages of hope and goodwill. The Police Force is prepared to ensure these events occur in a safe and secure environment.

“Finally, the Independence celebrations on September 16th will mark the beginning of a year-long series of national events. This will require extensive coordination with Provincial and District Commands to ensure the safety and security of these celebrations throughout the year.

“With our significant experience in managing major events, the RPNGC is equipped with enhanced training and early operational planning to ensure effective security operations.

“In managing these events, Police will work closely with the Defence Force, Correctional Services, and other key security partners. Cooperation with stakeholders such as Immigration and Customs, the National Airports Corporation, Air Niugini, and the National Events Secretariat is crucial to providing comprehensive security.

“We are a proud nation with a robust democracy, and the RPNGC is committed to ensuring the safety of our communities as they participate in these important national events.”
