BARKER STRESSED ON PNG’s POTENTIAL IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

WHEN deliberating on Entrepreneurship and Workforce Development – Lesson for the next mega project, Executive Director of Institute of National Affairs (INA) Paul Barker, outlined PNG’s potential in agriculture.

He said that PNG citizens can utilise agriculture in the space of entrepreneurship.

He made the remarks today (Wednesday), during the CANCONEX Papua New Guinea Resources Summit at UPNG, Port Moresby.

“One thing that we can say about entrepreneurship and employment generation is, the private sector that generates it,” Mr Barker highlighted.

“Yes, we hear politicians saying I’m going to create a youth employment scheme, or this, that, and the other. Some of those can be useful, but basically, it’s the private sector that generates jobs.”

Mr Barker stated further, saying PNG is a land filled with natural resources and transforming that into creating business will see citizens to have means to support and sustain their living.

“Papua New Guinea is rich and filled with milk and honey which we should invest in to build and create opportunities into entrepreneurship,” Mr Barker said.

Aligning to the Canconex main theme for Sustainable development, Mr Barker believes that when there is support made available in terms of advocacy in financial literacy, and funding for  Business Colleges, it will allow citizen to excel into entrepreneurship.

“We think the PNG LNG project was introduced, and it will fix all our issue,” he said.

“Unfortunately, in 2010, we suddenly forgot about the lessons that we’d learned, and we went back to thinking, wow, LNG fixes our problems.

“Most population out there in the rural communities and right through out the entire nation sustain their living through agriculture.”

Mr. Barker added that stability provides the key towards enhancing investment and job creation and that individuals should aim to achieve in stability for growth and development.
