Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has urged all communities in his province to remain calm and allow proper processes to proceed regarding recent developments at Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL).

“While we are disappointed that a good son of our province, Mr Wapu Sonk, is facing this situation, we must not let that disappointment disrupt the real gains our province is making in development, education, and security,” Governor Powi said.

“We need to let the process in court allow Mr Sonk to defend his integrity and professionalism.”

The Governor appealed for peace and lawful conduct: “I call on leaders, youth, and landowner groups to keep roads open, protect public and private property, and assist police in maintaining order. Violence, threats, and disruptions only harm our people and our economy.”

He reaffirmed the province’s focus on service delivery: “This disappointment—and our reaction to it—must not take away from the successes we are achieving and will achieve as we rebuild schools and police stations, restore vital bridges, progress the significant Mendi township expansion, and deliver other infrastructure across SHP.

“Our 50th Independence celebrations in SHP were safe, secure, and enjoyed by many; let us build on that spirit, not return to old attitudes. We must move forward together.”

“I ask for patience and unity from our people. Let the institutions do their work. Let us show the nation that Southern Highlands can respond with maturity, restraint, and respect for the rule of law,” Governor Powi concluded.
