Minister for Environment Conservation and Climate Change of Papua New Guinea and Lufa MP Hon. Simo Kilepa, was privileged to participate in the third (3rd) Voice of the Global South Summit (VOGSS 3.0), virtually in addressing the crucial theme of “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future.”
The Minister on a statement released today said that he was privileged to participate and extended gratitude to the Government of India for the invitation.
Minister Kilepa stated that the backdrop of our current global situation—marked by the aftereffects of a once-in-a-century pandemic, economic uncertainties, and widespread conflicts—necessitates our collective commitment and innovative solutions.
Kilepa during his address said that these challenges have undeniably impacted our development priorities, particularly in the Global South, where issues such as climate change, governance, international trade, and transnational supply chains are increasingly pressing.
“Papua New Guinea, like many developing nations, is at the forefront of confronting these challenges. Our commitment to addressing climate change and fostering environmental sustainability is unwavering. We are actively working towards enhancing our climate resilience and achieving our climate targets, in alignment with the Paris Agreement and our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs),” stated Minister Kilepa.
The minister annotated that Papua New Guinea recognizes the critical importance of technology support and exchange in its endeavors.
“India, with its advancements in green technology, renewable energy, and climate adaptation strategies, serves as a key partner for Papua New Guinea.
We believe that increased collaboration between our nations in these areas will significantly bolster our capacity to tackle climate change and promote sustainable development. By sharing knowledge, expertise, and technological innovations, we can enhance our efforts in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation.
The 3rd VOGSS serves as an invaluable platform for us to deliberate on these pressing concerns and to explore actionable solutions. The summit’s focus on empowering the Global South resonates deeply with our national priorities, and we believe that through collaborative efforts and shared experiences, particularly in technology exchange, we can chart a sustainable and equitable path forward.”
The Minister concluded by expressing his gratitude to the Government of India and said that he looks forward to engaging in meaningful discussions with fellow ministers and experts during the thematic sessions, and to contributing to the advancement of our collective goals.
“Our participation in this summit underscores our commitment to multilateral cooperation and our determination to address the unique challenges faced by developing countries.”
“Together, let us work towards a future where the Global South is empowered and resilient, and where sustainable development is within reach for all.”
