AS Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its 49th Independence Anniversary in four days, Prime Minister Hon James Marape urged the nation to refocus on pressing issues and work together for the future.
With the 50th anniversary only 12 months away, the Prime Minister highlighted the critical areas of law and order, the economy, health, education, and nation-building that require immediate attention.
In his speech during the Parliament Sitting Prime Minister Marape stressed the time lost to political infighting, specifically Votes of No Confidence, which have been a recurring disruption since independence.
“We have squandered months to politicking—precious time which we could have invested in bettering the lives of our people,” he stated.
He pointed out that nearly all governments since independence have faced Votes of No Confidence shortly after formation, leading to short tenures that hinder meaningful development.
He called for a re-evaluation of Section 145 of the Constitution, which governs the tenure of the Prime Minister, to ensure longer and more stable leadership.
Marape repeated the government’s ongoing initiatives to revive the economy, which include reversing a recessed economy, setting a target to grow the economy to K200 billion, and increasing returns from natural resources.
He noted that significant progress has been made in education by reintegrating over 100,000 young people into the system and expanding higher education capacity.
PM Marape urged all Members of Parliament to demonstrate unity and work towards common goals, calling on leaders from both sides to move beyond petty politics.
He reminded the nation of the unity appeals made by Founding Father Sir Michael Somare during the country’s early days of independence, emphasizing that the same spirit is needed now more than ever.
“We are four days from our 49th Independence anniversary and one year from our 50th one. Soon, we will begin the next 50-year chapter,” Marape said.
He stressed the importance of every citizen contributing to nation-building, from leaders in government to students and villagers.
As the country heads into its 49th Independence Anniversary celebrations, Marape urged Papua New Guineans to unite under the theme of “Reconciliation and Unity” and prepare for a brighter future.
“Happy 49th Independence to our people far and wide. We have come far, and we will continue to grow, as we learn from our experiences—to become wiser, to do better and to remain strong,” PM Marape said.
