Police Minister Sir John Pundari says police welfare and housing are his top priorities.

“We are trying to address crime and lawlessness in the country. Our Police need to be motivated and ensure their welfare,” Sir John told his first media conference since his recent appointment.

“Looking at the salaries and numerous insurance benefits of the police is very important.

“Sometimes we go out there, borrow money, and your take-home pay is unable to support you for a fortnight; these are some of the things that, for the interest of policing welfare, the commissioner will look into,” Sir John said.

The Police Minister said police welfare and housing needs were a nationwide issue.

“It’s not an easy operation. It must have good support to make sure we live peacefully wherever we are.

“That is why their welfare has to be protected, has to be guaranteed, they have to be motivated to ensure they commit themselves to the loyalty of the service to this nation.

“I want to acknowledge the hard-working police officers who sacrifice their lives and families to protect the territory of this nation,” Sir John said.
