As Papua New Guinea prepares to mark 50 years of nationhood, Director of the PNG Education Institute (PNGEI) Dr. Zui Neofa, has reminded the country that independence is not just a gift but a responsibility that demands discipline, unity, and vision.

Speaking during the Institute’s 50th Pre-Independence Anniversary celebrations, Dr. Neofa urged teachers and citizens alike to reflect on whether the nation has truly embraced the responsibility of freedom.

“Freedom is a gift and is an essential aspect of human dignity, that allows individuals to make choices and to shape their lives in accordance with their values and beliefs,” Dr. Neofa said. “But freedom means we can no longer blame others for our condition. Freedom means discipline in leadership, integrity in decision-making, unity in diversity, and the courage to deal with unfairness and complacency.”

Drawing parallels to the biblical story of the Israelites leaving Egypt, he stressed that freedom comes with weighty responsibilities. “When the Israelites were freed from Egypt, they were excited to be out of slavery. Yet soon, they discovered that freedom was heavy. It demanded discipline, courage, and a willingness to build a new identity,” he said.

Dr. Neofa also acknowledged the role of the Institute’s alumni in laying the foundations of the country, noting that many of PNG’s pioneer leaders were trained as teachers at the then Port Moresby Teachers College. He highlighted names such as Sir Michael Somare, Sir Paulius Matane, Sir Serei Eri, Sir Ebia Olewale, and Nahau Rooney, saying, “They made significant strides as teachers, with Nahau Rooney becoming the first female elected Member of Parliament.”

Dr. Neofa challenged educators to rekindle the same passion and commitment as their predecessors. “As the saying goes, teachers make or break a nation,” he said. “We are placed at a critical point now to influence the mindset of our generation at their vulnerable age. Do we as the current crop of teachers have the same passion, commitment, and vision to move this young generation forward with positivity and pride?”

He concluded with a powerful reminder that the future of the nation rests in the hands of dedicated teachers. “The success of the next 50 years depends on teachers who are serious and committed; the best gift we can give to our nation.”
