United Finance Limited (UFL) has donated a Common Spotted Cuscus, an endemic marsupial famously featured on Papua New Guinea’s 10 toea coin, to Port Moresby Nature Park, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation.

The presentation was made by Group Marketing Manager Hinuvi Onafimo and Marketing Team Leader Janet Thomas to Nature Park Conservation Manager Francis Gundu during a small but significant ceremony.

Mr. Gundu thanked United Finance for its continued support, highlighting that Port Moresby Nature Park is the country’s leading institution dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native wildlife back into their natural habitats.

“We cannot do this work alone. Conservation is the responsibility of everyone, organizations, communities, and individuals alike,” he said.

He emphasized that wild animals do not make good pets and belong in their natural environment, where they have adequate space and access to proper food sources.

“Many people unknowingly feed wildlife inappropriate food, which can harm or even kill them. Animals such as the cuscus survive on leaves and fruits, not processed foods,” Gundu explained.

He encouraged the public to release healthy wild animals back into nearby forests or bring injured ones to the Nature Park for professional care. He also urged residents to discourage the illegal street sale of wildlife, which remains a growing concern in Port Moresby.

Speaking on behalf of United Finance Limited, Mr. Onafimo reiterated the company’s dedication to protecting Papua New Guinea’s rich biodiversity.

“Papua New Guinea is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of flora and fauna, yet many species are increasingly threatened by development. As a financial institution, it is fitting that we help protect the Common Spotted Cuscus, a native species symbolized on our national currency,” he said.

“We believe Port Moresby Nature Park is the right place for this animal to be safeguarded for future generations.”

This marks the second wildlife donation by United Finance, following last year’s contribution of an echidna, which has since been successfully rehabilitated.

United Finance also called on the public to play an active role in protecting the environment and preserving Papua New Guinea’s unique wildlife heritage.
