2nd January 2025 | Kagua Erave District
Former Member for Kagua Erave Sir Yano Belo has strongly condemned the deliberate burning of the Kagua Erave Council Chamber, describing it as a tragic and senseless act of destruction.
Sir Belo is also the last man standing from the Highlands region who were the first members of the House of Assembly.
The iconic building, constructed under Sir Belo’s leadership in 1972, symbolized the district’s historical legacy and administrative foundation. Its loss, Sir Belo emphasized, is not only a physical destruction but a grave attack on the collective history and identity of the Kagua Erave people.
“The Council Chamber housed critical records and decisions that shaped our district,” Sir Belo stated in a statement.
“Its destruction represents an irreparable loss to our history and the leadership legacy of this community.”
Sir Belo called for swift police action to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He also urged the community to take a stand against such destructive actions, highlighting the importance of protecting vital infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals, which serve as lifelines for the district.
Sir Belo also stressed the importance of rebuilding the Council Chamber as a priority.
He described the reconstruction not only as a physical replacement but as a powerful symbol of resilience and hope.
“This is a time for unity and resolve,” he said.
“Let us turn this tragedy into an opportunity to reaffirm our values and chart a path forward with strength and determination.”
Sir Belo urged the people of Kagua Erave to come together, rejecting acts of destruction and embracing a shared responsibility to rebuild and secure a brighter future for the district.
