THE hatchery at the Huaripmo Farm in the Yangoru Saussia District had its first lot of day-old chicks sent out for trial on Friday, April 15.
The Member for Yangoru Saussia Open Richard Maru said the chickens were supplied to ten commercial farmers who had set up their chicken sheds.
“We will trial it and when we see that it works (if the chickens survive and not die from the heat of the sun, and are all sold out at right kilo after 6 weeks) then we will roll out the project to other villages and commercial farmers who want to go into chicken business,” he said.
The K5 Million hatchery at Huaripmo is the first hatchery in East Sepik province and it will mainly be supplying day-old chicks on commercial scale.
“If you can’t go into commercial farming (breeding and selling over 1000 chickens) then you can still make a little chicken shed and purchase about 100 day-old chicks to breed and sell,” said Maru.
“But you need to have clean water and the right stock feed (starter, grower and finisher) so you can sell out your chickens after 6 weeks,” he said.
“We are going into a new industry.
“Now you are selling coconuts, taro and bananas.
“In few weeks’ time, when the hatchery goes into full operation, chicken will be your new busines and it will also be a big business for the people of Yangoru Saussia, especially the communities along the highway because the Sepiks will buy live chicken and cooked chicken from you,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Huaripmo Farm would also be starting to buy wet beans to go into their commercial driers that could process 6 metric tons per hour.
The price for cocoa is also expected to be increased.
Maru also announced that he will be officially opening a new 15km road on Friday next week.
“We are building and just about to complete a 15km brand new road starting from Kiniambu to Sengera where there is an airstrip and a primary school.
“Sengera is the last village of Yangoru Saussia district and there has never been a road link there before,” he said.
During the opening next week, Maru would also launch the project for a new road to be built from Sengera (border of Yangoru Saussia) to Yentchen village in the Ambunti Drekikir District.
“They (people of Yentchen) have been crying and waiting for a road for years. We have 6km to reach them. Yangoru Saussia will connect Yentchen and we are funding that ourselves,” said Maru.
Maru said it is an important because the district would benefit from it
“They (Yentchen people) have the biggest fish stock in the province.
“After giving them the road, I will tell them to wholesale fish to the mothers of Yangoru Saussia district,” said Maru.
“We will make a new partnership with them; I give you road and you give me your fish.
“You don’t come and take my market space to sell the fish; you just be my wholesaler.
“I will sell it in my market; how I sell it and how much profit I will make depends on me,” he said.
Maru said all projects that are being carried out in the district are part of Yangoru Saussia’s grand vision to be the leading district in the province.
“Change and opportunities are coming.
“Grab them with both hands and start a new chapter and we move together,” he said.
