A wanted man was arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly causing destruction over a sorcery related death in Kaivukavu village, Ihu, Gulf Province.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Jeffery Lemb confirmed yesterday that the suspect (named) was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder under section 304(a) of the Criminal Code Act.

A police investigation team travelled to Ihu and took the suspect to the provincial capital of Kerema, with the support of the Ihu Rural Police Station Commander and his team.

PNG Tribal Foundation commended the police and families who had worked closely with them to fight for justice for families affected by sorcery related cases since February 2024.

The foundation has assisted these families with food, logistics and communication needs. They have also supported police operations, which had resulted in arrest of the main suspect last Sunday.

It was alleged that in February 2025, a 63-year-old man was attacked by group of youths over the sudden death of a woman in Kaivukavu village.

The suspects tried to kill the victim, destroyed his home and attacked his family members.

The elderly man was rescued and transported to Kerema where he was sent to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH).

Medical reports obtained from PMGH showed that he suffered neck and other injuries from the attack.
