Suspect faces multiple firearms charges

THE suspect in the attempted shooting incident at Ela Beach Hotel has now been formally charged with multiple firearms-related offences following complaints by two individuals.

Benjamin Ekip was initially charged on Saturday, July 26, 2025, with two counts under the Firearms (Amended 2022) Act: In possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol; and threatening with a firearm.

The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by Roxon Undi, Managing Director of Kana Construction.

In a new development today, police confirmed that the same charges have now also been laid a second time, this time under a separate complaint lodged by Mr. Steven Uglinga, an employee of Kana Construction who was with Mr. Undi during the incident.

The incident occurred between in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, at the Ela Beach Hotel car park. The suspect allegedly chased both men while brandishing a factory-made pistol and attempted to shoot them. Security guards from Black Swan intervened, subdued the suspect, and escorted him from the premises.

Ekip is denied bail today under the new firearms act. He is expected to appear in the Waigani District Court tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9am.

Ekip, 42,  from Giamo Village, Tambul, Western Highlands Province, is the owner of Eda Security Solutions.
