THE People’s Republic of China has donated medicine and medical instruments to the Port Moresby General Hospital (POMGH), highlighting its commitment to bolster healthcare efforts in the country.
This donation marks the implementation of the protocol on the assignment of the China Medical Team between PNG and China, which was signed last year. Under this agreement, the Chinese Government pledged to provide a set of medical instruments to PNG.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held on Tuesdayy, the Chief Executive Officer of POMGH, Dr Paki Molumi, highlighted the collaborative endeavours between China and PNG in delivering medical expertise and equipment.
He also emphasised the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted operation of healthcare services by supplying essential consumables.
“The collaboration between the two countries has resulted in significant achievement and comprehensive partnership has grown more solid and steady in economic, trade, culture and cooperation,” he said.
“In the health sector, a joint statement between China and PNG explicitly outlines to enhance exchanges and cooperation in the healthcare sector. And China will continue to send medical teams to PNG. Thank you, His Excellency, and the Peoples Republic of China.”
Minister for Health and HIV/AIDs, Dr Lino Tom acknowledged PNG’s relationship with the government of China.
“We are a developing nation and there is a lot more to learn from China. I know that with this ongoing relationship, I think we will learn a lot from each other. On behalf of the Health Department and the government, I’d like to thank the aambassador and your government for helping us with this important equipment and consumables that have been donated,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador, His Excellency Zeng Fanhua, said it was now a tradition for the Chinese side to donate medical supplies to the Port Moresby General Hospital every year.
He further expressed China’s willingness to enhance bilateral cooperation in the field of medical and healthcare.
He said China stands ready to assist the PNG government in improving medical services.
“In the year of 2024, I wish that there will be more in-depth people-to-people exchanges between China and PNG, the bilateral cooperation in various fields will be more comprehensive, and greater benefits will be created for the people of PNG,” he stated.
The ceremony saw the official signing for the handover of medical supplies by Minister Tom and H.E Zeng Fanhua.
The donated items comprise 72 medical instruments, available in various sizes for both adults and children, and are provided in substantial quantities.
