THE Porgera Gold Mine has suspended the majority of its operations until September 19th, for the protection of its employees while the government restores law and order in the surrounding region. Most of the mine’s workforce is from the local community.
Following the latest outbreak of tribal conflict in the area the government has implemented a state of emergency and is reinforcing the police presence there.
The Porgera mine’s asset protection unit is working closely with the government’s security personnel to ensure the safety of the mine’s employees.
New Porgera Limited has noted with deep regret that two of its off-duty employees have been killed in the offsite violence, which is not related to the mine and its activities.
