Prime Minister Marape Congratulates President-Elect Donald Trump, Signals Potential Shift in U.S.-PNG Relations under New Leadership

PRIME Minister James Marape welcomed Donald Trump’s election as the 47th President of the United States, marking a new chapter for U.S.-PNG relations. PM Marape emphasized PNG’s optimism for continued partnership, while noting distinct opportunities for a shift in approach under Trump’s leadership.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to outgoing President Joe Biden for his contributions to PNG’s healthcare, security, and sustainable development, highlighting key milestones like the 2023 Defense Cooperation Agreement, which strengthened regional security and stability.

PM Marape also praised Vice President Kamala Harris for her commitment to climate resilience and women’s empowerment in the Pacific. He acknowledged her historic role and impact on key issues that resonate with PNG’s goals.

With Trump set to take office, PM Marape signaled a readiness to work on PNG’s shared ambitions in the Indo-Pacific, looking forward to “reinforcing the longstanding partnership between our nations, grounded in shared values and mutual respect.” This change in leadership offers an opportunity to explore a more tailored, bilateral approach to advancing security and economic cooperation across the Pacific.
