PRIME Minister Hon. James Marape has praised the completion of the new Enga Provincial Hospital as a major milestone in Papua New Guinea’s health sector, calling it a testament to visionary leadership, patient planning, and strong collaboration between the national and provincial governments.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the K600 million world-class medical facility in Wabag on Monday, Prime Minister Marape said Enga has set a new benchmark for modern provincial health infrastructure.
“This is no ordinary upgrade — it is a state-of-the-art greenfield development that represents the best of what Papua New Guinean leadership, commitment and collaboration can deliver,” Prime Minister Marape said.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the steadfast leadership of Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, whom he credited for decades of persistence in pursuing better healthcare outcomes for the people of Enga.
“Governor Ipatas has worked many hours, many days, many months, and many years to bring this vision to life. Today, the people of Enga are the beneficiaries of that dedication.”
The Enga Provincial Hospital features modern medical equipment, specialist wards, and capacity to operate as a Level 5 facility, with aspirations to evolve into Level 6 or Level 7 status — servicing not only Enga but also neighbouring provinces across the Highlands and Western regions.
“This hospital will now serve not just Wabag, but the wider region — from Telefomin to Jiwaka, from Hela to Southern Highlands — all within an hour by air. It is a strategic medical hub,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Marape commended the use of tax credit funding from Porgera Mine and support from the Australian Government, which contributed AUD $7 million for the procurement of medical equipment.
He also paid tribute to past and present members for Wabag District, health officials, district administrators, engineers, and contractors who played roles in realising the project.
“From health workers and contractors to provincial officers and planners — everyone contributed to making this hospital a reality. Thank you for believing in the vision.”
The Prime Minister urged the Enga Provincial Health Authority to now focus on equipping the facility with trained personnel, including specialist doctors, nurses, and clinical staff to fully operationalise the hospital.
“Let’s not leave this building empty. Fill it with people. Train our own. Bring in the experts. And ensure this becomes a centre of excellence not just for Enga, but for Papua New Guinea.”
He concluded by stating that the Enga model demonstrates what is possible when public funds, provincial leadership, and development partnerships are all aligned.
“This is your blueprint. This is your victory. Congratulations, Enga — you have delivered a legacy.”
