Prime Minister Marape Pays Tribute to Late Rickson Poko

PRIME Minister Hon. James Marape has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Rickson Poko, a dedicated young teacher from Enga Province, describing him as a man of peace whose life was tragically cut short while trying to prevent conflict.

Speaking at the funeral service at Grace Baptist Church on Sunday, March 16, 2025, Prime
Minister Marape expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a promising educator who had
demonstrated unwavering commitment to his community and country.

“Rickson Poko was a peacemaker. He was a servant of his country and a servant of God.
He died trying to stop a fight, embodying the true spirit of peace and unity. His sacrifice is a testament to the values he upheld—compassion, service, and righteousness,” Prime Minister Marape said.

Rickson Poko hailed from Enga Province and was a graduate of the Papua New Guinea
University of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics in 2022.

Despite financial challenges, his determination led him to pursue further studies, including a postgraduate diploma in teaching, reflecting his dedication to education and community
development.

In February 2024, Rickson joined the Faculty at Hope Institute in Tari, Hela Province, where
he quickly became an invaluable member of the educational community. Recognising his potential, the institution supported his pursuit of advanced training to enhance his teaching
skills and contribute more effectively to the academic growth of his students.

Rickson’s life was tragically cut short in February 2025 when he attempted to intervene in an alcohol-fueled altercation between two individuals in Tari. Demonstrating his commitment to peace, he sought to de-escalate the situation but was fatally stabbed during the incident.

The swift action of the local community led to the apprehension of the suspect,
who is now in police custody awaiting prosecution.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the profound loss felt not only by the Poko family but by
the entire nation. He extended his appreciation to Grace Baptist Church and the wider community for coming together to honor Rickson’s memory.

“To the family, the church, and everyone gathered here today, I extend my deepest condolences. Your loss is our loss, and we share in your grief. May God’s comfort and
strength be with you all.”

Prime Minister Marape also reflected on the importance of faith and resilience, urging those
in mourning to remain steadfast in their belief in God’s plan.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God. Rickson Poko lived
by this principle, and I have no doubt that he now rests in eternal peace in the presence of
our Lord,” he said.

The late Rickson Poko will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Enga Province, leaving
behind a legacy of courage, humility, and unwavering service to his community and
country.
