Prime Minister Hon. James Marape yesterday delivered a heartfelt tribute as the body of the late Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan lay in state at the Grand Hall of Parliament.
“Today is a solemn moment where we honor one of the pillars of our young democracy,”
Prime Minister Marape said.
“Sir Julius dedicated his life to Papua New Guinea, shaping our nation through his
leadership, service, and unwavering commitment.”
Reflecting on Sir Julius’ distinguished career, Prime Minister Marape acknowledged his
remarkable contributions: “Sir Julius served distinctively—not just as Member for
Namatanai, not just as Governor of New Ireland Province, not just as a member of the
Opposition rising to Opposition Leader, not just as a Minister of State—but rose to the
highest office, serving as Prime Minister. He became our country’s second Prime Minister.”
He highlighted Sir Julius’ historic role in Papua New Guinea’s independence: “He stood
alongside Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare when our flag was raised for the first time at
Independence.”
As the nation mourns this extraordinary leader, Prime Minister Marape emphasised the
deep respect owed to Sir Julius: “Today, he returns to our National Parliament—for the last
time. And we pay him the utmost respect.”
Prime Minister Marape also recognised the people of New Ireland for their role in
supporting one of the nation’s most enduring leaders:”I want to take time to say thank
you to the people of New Ireland once again. This Parliament would have applauded
him in the very chambers where he worked consistently for 47 years. He served his people
distinctively, and a man like him deserves our fullest attention to his final wishes.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honoring Sir Julius’ last requests: “He explicitly wrote that he wanted only seven days before he was laid to rest. And so, we comply with his words, giving him this farewell in the Grand Hall.”
Addressing the Chan family, Prime Minister Marape expressed his deepest gratitude: “To Lady Stella, to his children, grandchildren, and family, I take this time to say thank you. You have lent him well to us, and for that, we are forever grateful.”
Concluding his tribute, Prime Minister Marape assured the nation that Sir Julius’ legacy would endure: “His life may have passed, but his legacy lives on. His work, his vision, and his service will continue to guide us as we move forward.”
