SUPPORTING education and career development has always been a core priority for the only nickel and cobalt mining company in Madang Province.
On August 15th, Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited (RNML) donated school supplies, sports materials, and food rations to Gawar Primary School and Tugyag Elementary School in Ward 13 of the Saidor Local Level Government, Rai Coast District. This initiative aimed to bolster the learning programs for students in these communities.
The donated items included atlases, pocket dictionaries, pencils, erasers, rulers, school exercise books, soccer balls, and food items, benefiting the students of both schools. The visit also provided an opportunity for Ramu NiCo representatives to interact with the students and engage in meaningful discussions.
Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery staff led a question-and-answer session with the students, focusing on how to care for their living environment, water, and air. This session was part of the company’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) awareness program.
Chairman of Gawar Primary School, Mr Koi Sabom, thanked Ramu NiCo’s ongoing support.
He highlighted that the refinery is located within the community where the students live, and many of them aspire to work with RNML after completing their education and pursuing professional careers.
He noted that the learning materials would significantly contribute to the students’ development, helping them become the vital human resources of Madang and Papua New Guinea.
“I also want to thank Ramu NiCo for funding the construction of a double classroom earlier this year at Gawar through the RNML Community Development Fund (CDF) program. The building is nearing completion,” Mr Sabom added.
Gawar Primary School currently has 639 students and serves as a feeder school for Rai Coast and Saidor High Schools.
Mr Sabom appreciated Ramu NiCo’s contributions, recognizing their importance in the students’ educational journey.
Ramu NiCo Corporate Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Manager, Mr Steven Opur, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering strong community relationships through their slogan, “One Ramu NiCo, One Community”.
He stated that Ramu NiCo, as the largest nickel and cobalt mine in the country, aims to motivate, encourage, and support the future generation of project footprint landowners.
“Our donation and awareness today are to show students that we are here to support their learning and help them become future leaders in their district, province, and country,” Mr. Opur said.
The Ramu NiCo team also visited Tugyag Elementary School on the same day, delivering the same awareness message along with school supplies and food rations to the 148 students.
