SHADOW CABINET ANNOUNCED; OPPOSITION

By JOEL K ANDREW

THE alternate government announced their shadow cabinet ministers, stating the significance of their crucial role in providing alternative policies, advices and leadership to ensure the developmental aspirations of Papua New Guinea are achieved.

Leader of the Opposition and Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Hon. Douglas Tumoriesa made this announcement today during a press conference hosted by the alternate government team at Dream Inn in Port Moresby.
Tumoriesa, stated that in keeping the government to account, their shadow cabinet follows parliamentary conventions to ensure that a concurrent oversight of the National Executive Council is kept for accountability sake.

“Your shadow ministers, although not fully-fledged ministers, will aim to provide alternative policies on the ministries they are responsible for. We aim to work with our line agencies to listen to what they think can be achieved better, be a voice of reason, keep the ministries in check, and provide solutions to them for possible implementations,” Tumoriesa said
He further reminded the country that similar to all Westminster systems of democracy, the shadow ministers named take direct precedence after our ministers as they are the government’s alternative, so the people can assist in assessing them against the government or vice versa.

He further called on the government for adequate funding to the opposition as they carry out their duties to ensure a robust system of government.
Governor for East Sepik and alternate Prime Minister Hon. Allan Bird commended his alternate government’s shadow cabinet and rebutted Prime Minister James Marape about the mishandling of the Vote of No-Confidence.

He said that the opposition is there to assist the government in handling several sensitive issues that may cause regression to the state.
“We did not falsify anyone’s signature as all members of the opposition had their turn of signing the motion, and we fulfilled all requirements of the motion,” Bird said.
He added that the alternate shadow cabinet and the opposition’s leadership is to ensure that there’s check and balance in the government when addressing sensible matters.

“The Prime Minister represents the people, state and us leaders as well. My best advise is for the Prime Minister to work extra harder,” Bird added.
Governor Bird stated that prior to the shadow cabinet ministers’ announcement, alternative policies have been compiled and that the opposition welcomes government ministers to an open debate as well.
