Sir Ano: Connect PNG Not Just About Roads

THE Connect PNG program is not solely focused on road infrastructure, according to Minister for National Planning Sir Ano Pala. During the 2025 Budget Press Lockup, Sir Ano emphasized that the initiative encompasses a broader vision that includes critical enablers essential for economic growth.

“Connect PNG is a major commitment of our government in an era of trade and growth, aimed at connecting districts and provinces, which ultimately provides economic outcomes for the country and the world,” Sir Ano stated.

He highlighted that a significant allocation of K690 million has been earmarked to improve key missing link corridors within the Connect PNG framework. However, he stressed that the program extends well beyond just roads.

“Connect PNG in all other enabling sectors takes into account air and water transport, energy, the PNG Ports Investment Program, the Lake Tiber Basin Industrial Development Project, Weaver Port Development, and National Seafood Services,” he explained.

Sir Ano also outlined several priority projects, including the re-fleeting of Air Niugini, the redevelopment of Borum Airport, upgrades to Port Moresby International Airport, Tokua Airport redevelopment, and the rehabilitation and maintenance of rural airstrips. Additionally, he mentioned the government’s commitments to Phase 2 of the Seagull Aviation Development Investment Program.

Under the Capital Investment Budget, funds have been allocated for energy initiatives. “The need for affordable and reliable power to electrify homes, industries, and businesses is ever so crucial,” Sir Ano noted. He stressed that the economy cannot reach its full potential without access to reliable and affordable power across all sectors.

“The value chain from power generation, transmission, and distribution needs critical attention,” he added. He also pointed out the importance of forging strategic partnerships to advance energy initiatives, citing the partnership with Indonesia as a key example. This collaboration aims to connect power from Indonesia to Wutung and Vanimo, which not only strengthens bilateral relations but also opens up significant economic and business opportunities, especially as Indonesia is poised to become the world’s fifth-largest economy within the next 20 years.

In this budget, the government is prioritizing investments that will expand energy generation capabilities. Sir Ano announced that K375.1 million has been allocated to support energy projects across the country, focusing on increasing generation options in various centers to meet growing demands through renewable energy sources.

Overall, Sir Ano’s remarks highlight the government’s comprehensive approach to infrastructure development, emphasizing that Connect PNG is a multifaceted program designed to enhance connectivity and economic growth in Papua New Guinea.
