THE iconic launching of the Somare Whitlam Australia scholarship in Port Moresby on Thursday, was a huge opportunity to boost education career pathway for young Papua New Guineas to study in Australia.
Reflecting on the immense service and dedication of the Late Grand Chief Michael Thomas Somare, Australian High Commissioner to PNG Mr. John Feakes applaud Somare’s effort in establishing good partnership with Australians.
“Papua New Guinea’s first Prime Minister late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare passionately believed in the future, potential of PNG, and fought for it over the entire course of his life,” Mr. Feakes remarked.
“All of us today are modern custodians of their partnership,” he added.
“The Somare Whitlam Scholarship recognizes the immense contribution that both men made to our both countries and the relationship between the two countries.”
He encouraged the scholars to grab the opportunity and make the most whilst living and studying in Australia.
Feakes further encouraged the scholarship awardees to showcase their country in Australia as they deepen their knowledge in their respective field of study.
He also highlighted that, PNG scholars going abroad to Australia for study continue to bring a clear testament of friendship, which he accredited to the work of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
Dulciana Somare, who was also present to witness the launching, congratulated almost 90 scholar awardees of the Somare Whitlam Australia scholarship.
She remarked that this achievement signifies the capacities, capabilities and resources that Papua New Guinea has as a nation.
Dulciana reiterated that the journey is filled with many exciting opportunities, and encouraged the awardees to take up the opportunity, learn and gain the quality education.
“You are destined to join the proud legacy of the Australian wards alumni who occupy the highest-level roles in institutions, corporations and community-based organisations throughout the world,” she said.
“Many of you here now will carry that torch, which will bring this country through some greatest trials and opportunities into the future.”
