A LANDMARK move to boost aviation services in the Southern Highlands Province (SHP), the Southern Highlands Provincial Government (SHPG) has signed a significant agreement with Kobio Aviation Limited to be based and operate in Mendi.
The agreement, signed in Port Moresby, marks a major step forward in improving air transportation in the province, ensuring better connectivity for businesses, government operations, and the general public. With SHP’s challenging terrain and the growing demand for efficient transport services especially in our remote communities, this partnership is expected to enhance accessibility, trade, and emergency response capabilities.
Southern Highlands Governor Hon William Powi during the signing ceremony, emphasized the importance of restoration effective and a reliable aviation service based in the province. He stated, “This partnership with Kobio Aviation is a game-changer for our people. It will provide essential air services that will improve economic activities, medical evacuations, and overall transportation efficiency.”

The Acting Provincial Administrator, Mr. David Kelma, also highlighted the significance of restoring aviation services in the province. He stated, “Aviation has always played a crucial role in connecting our people and supporting economic growth. The restoration of aviation services in Southern Highlands is vital for trade, health services, and development initiatives. This agreement ensures that our province remains accessible and well-connected with remote communities”
Kobio Aviation Limited, a trusted name in the aviation sector, will station its operations at Mendi Airport, offering services such as charter flights, medevac operations, cargo transport, aircraft maintenance services and support for government and private sector projects. The company aims to bridge transportation gaps and provide reliable services to the people of Southern Highlands and surrounding regions.
The CEO of Kobio Aviation, Mr. Kevin Hyllestad expressed gratitude to the SHPG for the trust placed in the company, stating, “We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient aviation services to the people of Southern Highlands and off course to the neighbouring provinces in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Our goal is to support development, ensure accessibility, and contribute to the province’s overall growth.”
