THE National St John Ambulance (NStJA) commemorated International St John’s Day with an award presentation ceremony honouring the exceptional dedication and service of its staff.
The event was held at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby today, Tuesday June 24, 2025.
The celebration served as a formal occasion to recognise and commend staff for their outstanding contributions, long-term service, and acts of courage.
It was witnessed by His Excellency Grand Chief Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae, Governor General of Papua New Guinea and President of the National St John Council, along with Health Minister Hon. Elias Kapavore, NStJA Council Board Chair Mr Isikeli Taureka, and both former and current council members.
In her official address, Interim Chief of St John Ambulance Papua New Guinea, Dr Arabella Koliwan, said: “As we honour International St John’s Day in Papua New Guinea, alongside St John associations around the world, we are commemorating our tradition, a shared mission, and the enduring values that bind us in service to humanity.”
Awards were presented in several categories, including the Nation Ambulance Citation, 5-Year Long Service, 10-Year Long Service, and the Commissioner’s Commendation Awards (Bronze, Silver, and Gold).
A total of 96 recipients were awarded the Nation Ambulance Citation Medal for their courage and commitment during the civil unrest on 10 January 2024.
These frontline workers, from Port Moresby, Lae, and Kokopo, demonstrated remarkable dedication, continuing their service despite significant personal risk.
Additionally, 57 staff members were honoured for 5 years of service, and 17 staff members received recognition for 10 years of service.
The ceremony concluded with the Commissioner’s Commendation Awards, presented to three high-achieving members in Bronze, Silver, and Gold categories.
In his keynote speech, H.E. Sir Bob Dadae reflected on the day’s significance: “International St John’s Day is a significant occasion for St John organisations globally. It underscores our shared mission to deliver health care and emergency services to those in need. Today, we not only celebrate our global connection but also the exceptional commitment of our local staff.”
He added: “As Governor General and the statutory Head of the National St John Ambulance, I take great pride in this role. The services provided—from emergency response and event standby to first aid and health education—make this organisation an indispensable part of our national safety net.”
Sir Dadae closed the ceremony by expressing heartfelt gratitude to the men and women of St John Ambulance for their unwavering courage and compassion.
He reminded them that the awards are a reflection of their enduring impact and praised each recipient for their invaluable service to the people of Papua New Guinea.
