A man who posted defamatory publications against the Police Minister Honorable Peter Tsiamailili Jr was arrested and charged and is now detained at Boroko Police Station.
Acting National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang confirmed that 51-year-old Samson Komati from Hagen Central in Western Highlands was formally charged with one count of defamatory publication under the Cybercrime Code Act 2016.
Superintendent Rubiang added that according to police investigators, it was alleged that on September 13, 2024, Komati posted defamatory materials using Social Media sites causing disaffection within and among the Police Minister on WhatsApp and Facebook.
He said that on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024, Mr Komati was informed through the phone to make himself available at Boroko police station, which he did today (Wednesday, 23). The police investigators called Mr. Komati in, and his allegation was once again explained to him at the CID office.
Supt Rubiang added that Mr Komati was then formally charged, told of his constitutional right, and detained in the cell. He said the suspect is still innocent and will prove himself in court when his court documents are ready.
Rubiang also issued a warning to the general public who use social media to spoil other people that there is a law in place to arrest and charge offenders who commit such offences.
“We must respect each other when we are online or offline. We are all different and we react to things differently. It is better to mind your own business than talking about others who are minding their own business, Rubiang added.
