TOKUA AERODROME SECURITY INCIDENT

As, the Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, I strongly condemn the security incident at the Tokua Airport in the early hours of September 13, 2023.

This incident resulted in extensive damage to the terminal, causing significant disruption to the airport’s operations.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is very disappointed in the brazen breach of security at Tokua. The vandalism that caused extensive damage to the terminal undermines the importance of efficient airport operations for the well-being and convenience of travelers.

I have instructed NAC to work closely with police to ensure that these criminals are held accountable. NAC and the police are now working to restore services at Tokua Airport.

The damage to this vital infrastructure and service not only disrupted airport operations but also posed grave danger to the safety of both airport personnel and travelers.

I thank the police and security personnel for promptly responding which prevented further disruptions of the facilities.

I assure the public that police are now undertaking investigations and have already established reliable leads for the arrest of the criminals.

I have NAC to also immediately carry out, necessary clearance so that normal operations can be restored.

I believe PNG Power in Kokopo was also vandalised last night according to Kokopo Police and it could be planned political act.

The safety and security of our nation’s airports is crucial. It is imperative that all necessary measures be taken to fortify and bolster our airport security systems.

Tokua Airport, like all airports, plays a significant role in facilitating the movement of the traveling public. It is a gateway to economic opportunities, vital services and personal connections. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of these lifelines when security is compromised.

The safety and security of our nation’s aviation infrastructure are paramount. Security enhancements will be urgently implemented at Tokua Airport and across the entire aviation’s sector, setting forth a resolute commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and security.
