THE Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is issuing a reminder to all school administrations and teaching staff regarding the proper use of institutional infrastructure.

TSC Acting Chairman Maini Mike Ugaia has observed that various school facilities, including classrooms, office spaces, libraries, and ablution blocks, are being utilized as teacher accommodations.

Following reports of staff residing in ablution blocks at Gerehu Primary School, the Commission is calling for these spaces to be vacated and returned to their intended purpose.

The Commission emphasizes that schools are built for teaching and learning, not for residential use.

While the TSC recognizes the challenges regarding housing, the integrity of the professional environment must be maintained. It is a matter of professional pride for our teachers, who are respected professionals, to ensure that school grounds remain dedicated to academic excellence. Seeing laundry on school fences during class hours is a concern that affects the professional image of our institutions and the focus of our students.

This call comes at a critical time when enrollment in National Capital District (NCD) schools is increasing and class sizes are exceeding standard requirements. Every available building within a school’s perimeter should be converted into learning spaces to offload overcrowded classrooms rather than being used for housing.

The Commission will be conducting school visits to monitor class sizes and ensure facilities are being used appropriately.

We kindly direct school boards to organize the relocation of staff from these buildings in a supportive manner, ensuring that our children have the space they need to succeed in their studies.
