Unggai-Bena District Sends First Ten Students to China for Higher Education

TEN students from Unggai-Bena District left Port Moresby this morning to pursue their studies at the China Three Gorges University (CTGU).The group, comprising seven males and three females, will undertake various Bachelor’s degree programs.

The students arrived in Port Moresby two weeks ago to finalise their travel arrangements with the assistance of the Unggai Bena District. Their education scholarships, funded by the Unggai-Bena District, highlight the district’s dedication to fostering academic growth through international exposure.

Dr Jethro Messimato, Director of the Unggai-Bena District Education Scholarship, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology, Hon. Kinoka Feo, who is also the local MP, for his unwavering support.

“This milestone is a significant step for Unggai-Bena, and we thank the Minister for making this a reality for the first 10 students,” Dr Messimato said.

The district is actively identifying and securing scholarships abroad to broaden opportunities for its students. “Our aim is to provide our young people with exposure and opportunities they may not easily access locally,” Dr Messimato, explained.“We aim to send 200 students in 2025 to China, India, Indonesia, etc. We facilitate the process by helping students identify scholarships, apply to universities, and secure placements based on their academic achievements.”

The District has also signed a memorandum of understanding with India’s Parul University, and a number of students are expected to depart soon under this agreement.

Dr Messimato thanks the Unggai-Bena District Development Authority, and anyone who contributed in one way or another to make it a success.

The district also extends its appreciation to Bernitha Kone and Dr Clement Waine for their instrumental role in facilitating the students’ preparations. Their efforts have ensured the successful launch of this initiative.

The Unggai-Bena District looks forward to seeing these students thrive in their studies and return with knowledge and skills that will contribute to the development of the district and the nation.
