Ace Football Club beat Karanas Football Club 0-1 to claim the Isifu Memorial Football tournament title held in Wewak’s Sir. Michael Somare Stadium.
Both teams displayed an entertaining performance throughout the final match of the tournament that kept the spectators on their feet until the final whistle.
Ace FC bagged the match’s only point in the second half of the 90 minutes and put on an extra effort that hold off the might of Karanas to seal off their unbeaten run with the tournament title.
Ace FC captain Theo Gule excitingly told Sunday Bulleting that God is the centre of all their preparation and he is glad to be part of the winning team to honour late Kevin Isifu.
“Thank you to all the teams that participated in the tournament and the supporters who supported us. I also thank the organizers of the tournament, we all honour late Isifu and hope to participate in other such event not only in sports but also in other (community) activities,” Gule said.
Gule also thanked the youths of Wewak town for the great spirit and celebration throughout tournament during the festive period.
Ace FC is one of the known football clubs throughout East Sepik and is hoping to one day represent the province in the top football completion in the country.
Moreover, the tournament director Mr. Derrick Maira said the tournament is the initiative of then Wewak MP late Kevin Isifu to keep youths occupied during festive season.
He said the competition was started in 2019 and is now hosted to honour late Isifu.
“As the tournament director I acknowledge late Isifu for the vision to establish this tournament to give the youths not only in sports but to establish social bond through football. The tournament has helped in reducing social issues during Christmas and new year period,” Mr. Maira said.
Mr. Maira said the number of teams registered for 2022-2023 tournament have reduced compared to the previous years but the objective remains the same and he thanked all the sponsors and the people who contributed to the tournament.
