AFL grand finals set for Saturday

The Port Moresby Moni Plus Australian Football League (AFL) women’s competition 2025 has approached its end with the finals set for Saturday 13September 2025.

Title holders Gerehu Magpies and debutants Skyroos are set to put up an exciting match at the Port Moresby ALF ground.

With anticipation building up for the showdown, supporters have been urged to show their support in a way that will not disrupt the flow of the game.  

Senior development officer with AFL PNG and also assisting Port Moresby AFL as a competition coordinator, Rex Leka gave the highlights of the successful season 2025 and wished the two team all the best in the finals on Saturday. 

“The 2025 Moni Plus women’s grand final between the Gerehu Magpies who have been here or the last couple of seasons and we have the new team the Skyroos that have entered the competition this year.

“It is a very big congratulation to the new team that have come this far and to play the grand final on their debut season,” Leka said.

“This is the third time for the Gerehu Magpies will play finals and we expect a very big crowd from their end to turn up.

“Skyroos with the lot of young girls coming in from the PNG Flames team, will definitely have a lot of supporters turning up to support them.

Leka urged the supporters to enjoy the game and not disrupt it as police presence will be known to control the crowds.

There will be curtain raiser games before the main grand final event with cash prizes for the winners and the runner-ups.

Leka also urged the players to observe the rules and play safe with umpires.

Gerehu Magpies skipper, Monika Api, expressed her enthusiasm as she graced the grand final with the well prepared team at her back.

“Last year we won, and this year we are looking at winning the competition. The girls have trained hard and are prepared for the grand final this Saturday,” she said.

With veteran coach Racheal Lavi Talania, Magpies are set to play finals footy and the coach is confident the girls will do it again.

Skyroos Captain Monika Tindipu spoke highly of her team despite being the debutant team this year.

Despite losing three times form magpies in the normal round, Tindipu led the way with her two friends from PNG Flames to push the team to the grand final.

Under coach Chevalier Ujar, Tindipu and the girls have got the everything the coach wants to prepare for.
