David Ome of Team NCD has defended his national boxing title at the recent National Boxing Championships held in Lae.

Among the team’s impressive haul of 11 gold medals, Ome stood out by retaining his 48kg division title after defeating Jeffrey Gaffa of Team Misima.

Speaking to the Sunday Bulletin upon his arrival from Lae, Ome shared his experience and reflected on his performance at the championship.

He described the three-day event—from Thursday to Saturday—as intense, with boxers showcasing a range of unique fighting styles. In the final bout, Ome overcame a tough challenge from Gaffa, winning by points after three grueling rounds in the ring.

“It was great to defend my 48kg National Boxing Championship title,” Ome said. “So far, I’ve had a total of five fights—two international and three national titles.”

With his recent victory under his belt, Ome is now setting his sights on the upcoming Oceania Championships in Tahiti this September.
He expressed confidence in securing a spot in the PNG national team.

Following his return from Lae, Ome is set to rejoin Team NCD as they resume training tomorrow in preparation for the regional tournament.

He extended his gratitude to the Team NCD management for their support, ensuring the boxers’ welfare was prioritized and that they were well-prepared for the competition.

Ome made special mention of Head Coach Mark Keto for his dedication in preparing the team, and also thanked Assistant Coach Jack Willie, who led the team to Lae and witnessed their successful campaign, which included 11 gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.

Team NCD was awarded the National Boxing Cup for being the best-performing team—a title they have now held for six consecutive years.

Ome also thanked his friends and family for their overwhelming support in Lae, which he said gave him strength in the ring.

With deep satisfaction, he gave thanks to the Lord for his continued guidance and strength, noting that discipline, dedication, and commitment have been the cornerstones of his journey and drive toward even greater achievements in boxing.
