GOROKA the provincial capital of Eastern Highlands is expected to be flocked with athletes from all its eight districts when they host their provincial games next month.
The eight districts will field nine teams to take part in nine different sporting codes in one of the biggest provincial sports festival since Covid-19 pandemic lock down.
The games are scheduled to take place from July 5-10, 2021 at the Goroka National Sports Institute and Sir Daniel Leah Oval. This is on the second week of the school holidays to allow for the young students to also part take in the events to represent their respective districts.
All teams have been advised to move into the township of Goroka On July 4, 2020 for the opening of the EHP provincial games.
The provincial games’ is to allow selectors to select athletes to represent EHP in the coming PNG Games in Southern Highlands province on August, 2021.
EHP Games Director Leeroy Kume said they have planed the event in accordance with the Covid-19 protocols.
“August is just next month and we are trying to get things done to select a team for APNG games and we are on track.
“The Covid-19 protocols are applicable in all games venues. No masks no entry. We will have mobile water tanks and detergent at all gates of entry and security guards will be on the ground to see protocols are followed,” Kume said.
Kume further appealed to each district MPs for all eight districts in EHP to assist their district teams to make this event successful.
Moreover there will be field events, fight sports and track events. The event is all planed out where the PNG veteran Athlete Nelson Stone will be the games Ambassador visiting athletes from each district at times and give talks to motivate the up and coming PNG athletes.
