Laurie Daley set to be announced as NSW Origin coach

AAP: CANBERRA Raiders legend Laurie Daley is set for a second stint coaching the men’s NSW State of Origin team.

Laurie Daley is set to be appointed NSW’s new State of Origin coach, seven years after he was first sacked from the role.

The NSW Rugby League called a snap press conference for Monday morning at their Homebush headquarters, where they are expected to appoint Daley as Michael Maguire’s successor.

Maguire coached the Blues to Origin glory in his first year at the helm before leaving to take up the head coaching role at NRL club Brisbane.

Daley had appeared the front-runner for the vacant position for some weeks, enjoying strong support from members on the NSWRL board

Paul McGregor and Matt King had been two other options boasting experience as both Origin players and assistant coaches.

Daley won six of 15 games as NSW coach between 2013 and 2017 but memorably led the Blues to a series win in 2014 that broke Queensland’s eight-year streak of Origin triumphs.

The NSWRL will also name the new women’s State of Origin coach on Monday after Kylie Hilder stepped down from the role in November following consecutive series losses.
